The 2020 Blewitt Springs Grenache is perfumed, spicy, attractive... incredible. It’s long and plush, but the skeleton of tannins shows the longevity and precision of the style. There are notes of clove bud, raspberry pip, licorice, silty tannin and loads of exotic spice. And very fine saline acidity. I don’t talk much about acidity in these wines, but it pulses through the fruit and tannic framework… there’s blood and rose petals. I love this mightily.

Clarendon Hills 2020 Blewitt Springs Grenache

- Wine Advocate, Erin Larkin

"The 2021 season in South Australia, and specifically here in McLaren Vale, was sensational. Cool, long and even, the season gifted the producers/growers sunshine, long days and pleasant nights in abundance. I expected very fine, lithe, almost lacy wines as a result, but I think you know what they say about "assume." This 2021 Blewitt Springs Grenache feels very ripe in the mouth (despite the relative 14.6% alcohol on the label) and is laden with hoisin, star anise, clove, aniseed/arnica, roast beef and pomegranate molasses. The finish slopes off to mulberry compote and cherry kirsch, which is where it feels very (sun) ripe to me. All in all, this is a surprisingly big Grenache, with power to spare. It will benefit from a decant—it already looks better after 10 minutes in the glass. The lingering aftertaste is of red snakes. Sealed under Diam."

This wine comes from a single vineyard, with 25-year-old vines. Very pretty nose! The 2020 Liandra Syrah shows hints of bergamot and black tea, floral and fennel spice. This is a gorgeous wine—supple, excellent. I love the tannins, which are pliable and flexible. This is the Eden Valley Shiraz of McLaren Vale: mineral, dark and thrilling. It is stylistically quite different from the other Clarendon Hills wines, and I love it for that.

Clarendon Hills 2020 Liandra Syrah

The 2021 Liandra Syrah is meaty and spicy, layered with raspberry jam, pepper-rolled pastrami, cracked cumin and fennel seeds, violets and a streak of black tea. The tannins are firm, and there is a purity about the fruit. The acid is tangy and fresh through the finish, working with the malt/caramel oak to distract the mouth from the fruit, which is, and should be, the main show. There's a raw/bloody character to this that I find both cleansing and attractive. 14% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Black fruit, pencils and earth, dark chocolate, dried flowers. It’s full-bodied, dense and packed with graphite tannin, ripe black fruits and tobacco, ample yet still fresh, and suffused with ‘mineral’ feel, finish is very long and ferrous, with perfume and praline trailing. Outstanding.

A 50/50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet. Merlot planted in 1990, the Cabernet in 1995. Blewitt Springs. It does taste very good. I really like the Clarendon Hills expression of Cab/Merlot etc. I seem to like them, and their Grenache, a whole lot.
Blackberry, dried cherry, aniseed, nutmeg, and cedar/pencil oak. It’s medium-bodied, plum and cassis, choc-nut flavours, a little olive tapanade, truffle perfume, cool acidity, silty Turkish coffee tannin, a praline richness, but classic Cabernet character. Quite the ‘mineral’ feel, and fresh too, a gravelly and chocolate-laced finish of excellent length. Such a good wine. You could buy one bottle of ‘Astralis’ or nearly twelve of this. Hello! So excellent!
