Clarendon Hills Liandra Syrah 2022

$65.00 / bottle

Located in the South Western edge of the famous Blewitt Springs sands, the site reveals a mid weight expression. Offering lifted floral notes that mix with bacon fat, leather and roast meats; the satsuma plum backbone and silken texture offers a youthful approachability and a lengthy opportunity in the cellar to pursue those truffled, earthy characters wine aficionados seek. The 2022 offers unbridled approachability with an already silken smooth palate and layer upon layer of earthy notes, black olive tapenade and salami. Experience youthful, exquisitely crafted Blewitt Springs Syrah with this very special early release offer, exclusively for my Cellar Members.

Region

Region

Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale: 10 kms N/E of McLaren Vale. 250 metres above sea level. High altitiude Blewitt Springs site above the sands. Terroir composed of decomposed ironstone, quartz, shale and schist. Circa 750 million year old geology sprawls across the vineyard location.

Conditions

Conditions

The 2022 vintage was the second La Niña growing cycle in a row. Healthy Spring time rains continued well in to the Summer and bought about two things: big canopies that lead to a delayed veraison. The grapes in Clarendon had barely started colouring up when the Blewitt Springs sites had largely completed the colouring cycle. Alas, a week of late February heat bought everything back into balance and all sites were harvest in early to mid March under perfect 25-27 ̊ C days with 12 ̊C cool nights. The season always demonstrated voluptuous berry perfumes and offered a kaleidoscope of floral complexity.

Winemaking

Winemaking

Low yielding, dry grown vines from the Blewitt Springs region in McLaren Vale were hand-picked and followed by a 60% whole berry, wild yeast fermentation. All pressings were returned to barrel and eventually bottled onsite without fining or filtration after 18 months in French Oak.

Maturation

Maturation

18 months, within a hierarchy of 1-5 year old tightly grained French Oak. Bottled at the winery with no fining or filtration.

Grape Variety

Such good packaging, though even better in 2022, as the red capsule really sets it off. Tasted alongside the 2021 Liandra, and this is quite different, a little less ripe, drier, and certainly more spicy.
GW: Blackberry, cracked pepper, roast beef, lavender. It’s full-bodied, deep and grainy, plenty of roast meat and herbs, balanced acidity, with a firm tannic finish of fine length. Savoury and complex. Very good.
KS: More purple in this wine in comparison to 2021. Meaty, with cracked pepper pinch and rubbing spice, thyme, sage and black olive, it’s savoury at large. Black fruit and graphite, cool stony tannins rolling through the concentrated juice. Finishing with a minty hit. Greatness all up.

Sourced from the eastern patch of the Sandown Vineyard. A compact nose of plums and quince, with a menthol twang to the mid-palate. Just a bit drying. Plenty of tea-smoked duck, beef bouillon and flowers. This should do well in the cellar. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.
