Clarendon Hills Liandra Syrah 2021

$65.00 / bottle

The Clarendon Hills Liandra Syrah site is located in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. Located in a sandy section of the famous Blewitt Springs sands, the site reveals a mid weight expression that reveal well after a few years in the cellar. Offering lifted floral notes that typically mix with bacon fat, leather and roast meats; the satsuma plum backbone and silken texture offers a youthful approachability and a lengthy opportunity in the cellar to pursue those truffled, earthy characters wine aficionados seek.

Conditions

Conditions

After three dry and warm-to-hot vintages in a row, 2021 was a bit of a relief for local winemakers. Heavy rain in the early growing season gave healthy levels of balanced fruit, with the total crush up 28% from the lows of 2020. After a hot start to the season, the weather cooled in December, avoiding any significant heat spikes. The cooler ripening weather and elevated yields show in the elegance and generous fruit in the wines.

Restrained aromas of well-appointed oak and Damson plums, saturated, dense and full-bodied. Opens up nicely across shapely tannins into a finish of impressive length. Notes of iodine, lilacs and sassafras. Riper than the ‘22. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

2021 Liandra Syrah

- James Suckling, Ned Goodwin MW

The 2021 Liandra Syrah is meaty and spicy, layered with raspberry jam, pepper-rolled pastrami, cracked cumin and fennel seeds, violets and a streak of black tea. The tannins are firm, and there is a purity about the fruit. The acid is tangy and fresh through the finish, working with the malt/caramel oak to distract the mouth from the fruit, which is, and should be, the main show. There's a raw/bloody character to this that I find both cleansing and attractive. 14% alcohol, sealed under Diam.
