Roman Bratasiuk championed grenache before many but, with the newer revolution televised, the Clarendon Hills wines are seeing a second wave of influence. Fragrant and fine? No. The house stamp is there (so, please decant) but with less brood, more detail. This is from the Blewitt Springs vineyard, planted mainly in the '40s, and is the most finessed of the ’23 grenache bottlings. It's savoury in its delivery, with tart but concentrated dark red fruits, scented with souk spices, damask rose and licorice root. There’s a sinewiness to this, a compact between tannin and acid that puckers and draws flavours long. A lot’s going on here, and this will live for a long time.

2023 Romas Grenache

- Wine Companion, Marcus Ellis

Perfumed, sophisticated and lively. Aromas of blue and black fruit with notes of pomegranate, plums and violets. The palate is seamlessly balanced with bright acidity and fine-tuned tannins, showing layers of graphite, iodine, boysenberries and spices. Very well-made with a vibrant energy from a cooler vintage. Drink or hold.

2023 Romas Grenache

- James Suckling.com, Ryan Montgomery

Fragrant, in a spicy way, fruits deep red and black, tar and a rugged, ferrous rockiness, with clove, black pepper, star anise, brown cardamom, red and purple florals and soused citrus peel. It’s not unusual here, but this really needs ample air to show its best. It has less heft than the Onkaparinga, but still plenty of power and structure, plus a supple viscosity across the palate. As said, air is needed, with floral notes filtering out and a greater sense of levity. Cellar for a couple of years to begin with or decant and stand for a half a day.

The 2023 Romas Grenache is cool in expression, lightweight in the mouth and mineral through the long finish. The wine is defined by its score of black fruit and its shapely outline of pliable tannin. The tannins are the highlight here; they seamlessly knit the fruit together through the mid-palate and finish. The wine is dark, and brooding in its way, but it achieves and maintains levity throughout. This is an interesting release of Romas; and I have to say, I really like it. It feels like a wine of the land: crushed rocks and driven by fruit purity. Sophisticated. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

2023 Blewitt Springs Grenache

The 2023 Domaine Clarendon Grenache leads with a bouquet that is stubbornly resisting any alignment with the palate. There are two stories in this glass: one—the first—is told by the aromas: black, tarry, intense peat, licorice, blackstrap, biltong and crushed rocks, even a hint of crushed ant. The second story is told by the fruit in the mouth: succulent, vividly red and purple, compote in composure, saturating and palate staining. One assumes that for these two aspects of the wine to come together, you must decant it. Already it is starting to coalesce, but it has been 20 minutes in the glass. This is a powerful, inky rendition of this wine—and one not to be taken lightly. This is a whole lot of wine for the money. 14% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

The 2023 Onkaparinga Grenache is starting to come together in the glass, although I have been working hard at encouraging it to do so. The 2023 Grenaches from Clarendon Hills are aligned in their brooding, dark, tarry bouquets. I admit to being surprised by these qualities, given the plushness of fruit inherent on the palates. Here, the 2023 Onkaparinga Grenache is driven by a palate of sweet spicy fruit and shaped by gritty, pliable, sandy tannins. The chew of the wine, on the middle palate, is refreshing and satisfying, and it indicates that the wine will look even better tomorrow. Despite the cooler year and the lower alcohol (for Grenache), this is a bruisingly big wine, with a pure core of red fruit wrapped in a case of tannin, and with bracing acidity. 14% alcohol, sealed under Diam.
