The Clarendon Hills Onkaparinga Grenache 2010 magnum hails from one of McLaren Vale’s best old vine Grenache sites. The elevated location of this Blewitt Springs site provide added mineral components to the cuveee and provides its regional qualities of blood orange and ferrous like rust correlated with the ironstone content of the terroir. The wine hails from little bush vines approximately 30 cm tall and extremely low yielding. The Onakapringa Grenache cuvee presents as one of the lightest framed grenache we make and this 2010 example is no exception to the rule. Lifted strawberry, musk and blood orange notes on release have  evolved and these qualities still exist albeit behind the savoury spices and earthy notes that now dominate the headline of this example. Think earthiness, flint, game meat, black tea, umami porcini note, dried basil and lavender across wild strawberry and raspberry berries. The magnum format ensures the primary components of the cuvee are even better preserved and in abundance by comparison to the 750ml example. This is grand cru McLaren Grenache in large format with 13 years on it. I implore all members to experience this wine in large format, you will thank me later. Members only.
