The nearly 100-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines at the Sandown vineyard produce perhaps McLaren Vale’s most prolific Cabernet Sauvignon. The old dry grown gnarly vines are located in a sandy section of Blewitt Springs, where the ironstone and quartz begin to emerge, in the southernmost part of the region. The result is truly spellbinding. We effectively hand-make this Clarendon Hills Sandown Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 MAGNUM and gently press it into some of the most rarified French oak on this planet. The long and understated tannins are a hallmark of this wine on release so it is without any wonder the 2010 looks absolutely polished and ethereal in its semi-mature posture. In what is one of the most iconic vintages on record, 2010 wines all demonstrate their superiority instantly; furthermore, we actually received a perfect score of 100/100 on our Astralis in the 2010 vintage and this wine isn’t far behind. With 13 years under its belt in the cellar the perfume on this example lifts well beyond the glass and protrudes layers of earth, lead pencil shavings, mahogany, leather and cassis. The layers continue to develop in the glass and it becomes apparent this wine has become exquisite with age. Looking more like an ‘old world’ example than new, the primary intensity is tempered with earth and lead pencil notes and gently flinty terroir characters. The long layered polished finish highlights the winemaker’s deft touch.
