The Clarendon Hills Onkaparinga Old Vine Grenache hails from a bush vine, single vineyard in the upper reaches of Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. The vines were planted in 1946. The high density rocks found beneath this vineyard site encourage the vines to concentrate their vine height: after 80 years of growth, the vines have only managed approximately 30-40cm of vine height. The site is extremely low yielding and highly concentrated. The quality standard in the cellar is unmistakably world class and is considered a Grand Cru vineyard by Clarendon Hills. It is made only in the best years. Richly layered and deeply flavoured, the single vineyard expression reveals notes of confectionary like Turkish delight and musk coupled with delicately floral violet and rose petal while layers of fine blueberry, raspberry and cherry skin intertwine with ethereally light and effortless incense and crushed rock mineral notes . Harmoniously balanced and effortlessly powerful, the supple tannins are already soft enough to open up and enjoy today.

Region
Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale is a sprawling hillside region 12 kms North East of McLaren Vale town centre. Famous for its deep sands and many flowing hillsides, Blewitt Springs is home to some of the oldest Old Vine Grenache plantations in the world. The Onkaparinga Grenache Vineyard was planted circa 1945. The region enjoys added comparative elevation to its surrounding McLaren Vale districts and its abundantly flowing hillside aspects have a deeper hidden secret to their prominence: a mineral rich subterranean, highly decayed layer of ironstone and quartz that impart a myriad of nuanced mineral notes to the wines produced. The 6 km proximity to the Great Southern Ocean and St Vincents Gulf also imparts a gift of Chardonnay like acidity to the reds which impart an infinite freshness to the wine style. The Onkaparinga Old Vine Grenache vineyard is a single vineyard expression from an old gnarly low yielding bush vine patch of Grenache section of our "Onkaparinga Vineyard" is also home to our Onkaparinga Syrah site. The Grenache section has a due West aspect and receives the shade in the morning and warm afternoon sun. It is located at 290 metres above sea level and represents Blewitt Springs’ higher altitude stony geology with less sands in this section and more highly compacted geology of coarse quartz, ironstone, shale fragments. This site is approximately 500 metres away from our Romas Vineyard.
Conditions
Wet and humid growing conditions in 2023 persisted throughout the year and continued in to the Spring time and Summer that preceded the 2024 harvest. The warm and wet conditions encouraged the Old Vine Grenache vineyards to shoot many buds and all Grenache sites were 25% heavier than usual. Slightly heavy crops were relatively behind ripening schedule in Summer but the clearing of the wet conditions in 2024 mid January lead to fantastic ripening period across late January to March. Large healthy bush vine canopies pulled the fruit in to line and their voluminous sizes protected the large berry bunches from the hot Summer heat. Hand harvesting occurred in mid March after a prolonged ripening period from veraison. The arriving fruit was exquisite with deep flavours and bountiful volumes. A rare combination of great yield and also exceptional quality. The 2024 growing season suited Grenache and the quality is evident in the collection of delicious 2024 wines.

The 2023 Onkaparinga Grenache is starting to come together in the glass, although I have been working hard at encouraging it to do so. The 2023 Grenaches from Clarendon Hills are aligned in their brooding, dark, tarry bouquets. I admit to being surprised by these qualities, given the plushness of fruit inherent on the palates. Here, the 2023 Onkaparinga Grenache is driven by a palate of sweet spicy fruit and shaped by gritty, pliable, sandy tannins. The chew of the wine, on the middle palate, is refreshing and satisfying, and it indicates that the wine will look even better tomorrow. Despite the cooler year and the lower alcohol (for Grenache), this is a bruisingly big wine, with a pure core of red fruit wrapped in a case of tannin, and with bracing acidity. 14% alcohol, sealed under Diam.
