Planted in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale during the 1930’s the Sandown Cabernet Sauvignon site is populated by a rare pre-phylloxera Chateau Reynella Cabernet Sauvignon clone that expresses the ancient Blewitt Springs terroir with opulence and majesty. Low yielding, west facing old vines produce a powerful yet refined and elegantly composed, classic Cabernet Sauvignon with notes of black currant, graphite, slate, earl grey tea, sage and bay leaf mixed with cedar shaving and baking spice with a roast meat undertone that gives the wine power and presence.

Region
Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale: 10 kms N/E of McLaren Vale and approximately 225 metres above sea level. Blewitt Springs is famous for its deep sands and old vines.
Conditions
Encouraging Winter and Spring rain in 2013 set the pace for a larger than usual fruit set for vintage 2014. Ideal conditions across the fluorescence period saw the vineyards develop healthy canopies and plentiful bunches. A warm summer extended towards the ripening window of late February/early March and the vineyards were picked at full physiological ripeness. The fruit in 2014 was always very impressive with both healthy acid and generous ripeness that made the wines really shine.
Winemaking
Low yielding, dry grown Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted in 1930 were hand picked from the single vineyard located in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. A wild yeast primary fermentation then cultured and fermented for 30 days in stainless steel. Then pressed in to extremely high end French Oak and matured for 18 months.
Maturation
18 months, within a hierarchy of brand new barrels up to 5 year old tightly grained French Oak. Bottled at the winery with no fining or filtration.

"Still quite firm and tannic, the 2014 Sandown Cabernet Sauvignon is at the same time highly perfumed, with exquisite aromas of cassis, blueberry and mint. Medium to full-bodied, it should begin drinking well around 2022."
