Planted in the early 1940s, low-yield, small berries make for a cabernet that has a gently herbal edge with sage and roasting herbs, slate and graphite. Some blueberries and blackcurrants, too. The palate has powerful and intense, dark-berry flavors, carried on strapping, intense tannins. Big, powerful cabernet. So intense and long. Fresh, clear-cut finish. Impressive core power. Try from 2026.

2016 Sandown Cabernet

This has real depth and concentration, as well as purity of cassis and dark-cherry fruit with an overlay of roasting herbs and bay leaf. Distinctive cabernet. The palate has distinctive freshness and sanguine, powerful tannins that carry some cocoa powder-like tones. Fine and dry finish with bright, fresh acidity. Black-fruit finish. Drink over the next decade.

2018 Sandown Cabernet

Layers of blackcurrants, crushed blueberries and violets as well as cedar, mahogany and iodine. The palate is full-bodied with finely tuned tannins and bright acidity, showing dark chocolate, plums and blackberry compote. Such a polished, restrained cabernet with plenty of years ahead in bottle. Drink or hold.
