Showing more red fruits than the other two cabernets, with a touch of violet and cigar box as well; the palate is lively and fresh and the acidity is a more prominent feature, providing a long, fragrant and even conclusion.

2010 Sandown Cabernet Sauvignon

Planted in the early 1930s, low-yield, small berries make for a cabernet that has a gently herbal edge with sage and roasting herbs, slate and graphite. Some blueberries and blackcurrants, too. The palate has powerful and intense, dark-berry flavors, carried on strapping, intense tannins. Big, powerful cabernet. So intense and long. Fresh, clear-cut finish. Impressive core power. Try from 2026.

Slippery smooth, slated with tannin, substantially fruited and most of all: seductive. This year you're on a winner with Sandown. Cassis, earth, mint and flecks of tobacco. How long do you have? Chances are it will live longer than that.

2012 Sandown Cabernet

Layers of blackcurrants, crushed blueberries and violets as well as cedar, mahogany and iodine. The palate is full-bodied with finely tuned tannins and bright acidity, showing dark chocolate, plums and blackberry compote. Such a polished, restrained cabernet with plenty of years ahead in bottle. Drink or hold.

2024 Sandown Cabernet Sauvignon

From vines planted in 1930 to the Reynella clone in Blewitt Springs. This unwraps over days, like many Clarendon Hills wines, though perhaps more so than any in this vintage. There are some high notes of fresh thyme, sage, mint and hedgerow, along with cigar tobacco and cedar over a core of blackberry, blackcurrant and wild raspberry, which melt into a darkly mineral core, the drive of acid and robust linear tannins auguring for a long life ahead. It’s an excellent release, but a year or two of cool slumber is advised before broaching, though the pleasure will still flow with half a day in a decanter.
