And with every pack I’ll include a magnum of 2004 Hickinbotham Syrah and also a magnum of 2004 Hickinbotham Cabernet Sauvignon. Both are rated highly by Parker and Halliday and are cellared to the prime of their life.  And for a limited time only, I’ll also include a bottle of 2013 Astralis rated 97/100 by James Suckling . Both magnums are in exquisite condition at 22 years of age and present incredibly decadent, utterly cerebral expressions of old vine Syrah and Cabernet. The overall pack highlights some the best vineyards in McLaren Vale.

The 2006 Syrah Brookman Vineyard was aged in 100% new oak. Complex both aromatically and on the palate, it will benefit from extended cellaring of 8-10 years.

This wine comes from a single vineyard, with 25-year-old vines. Very pretty nose! The 2020 Liandra Syrah shows hints of bergamot and black tea, floral and fennel spice. This is a gorgeous wine—supple, excellent. I love the tannins, which are pliable and flexible. This is the Eden Valley Shiraz of McLaren Vale: mineral, dark and thrilling. It is stylistically quite different from the other Clarendon Hills wines, and I love it for that.

2020 Liandra Syrah

The aromas that mark this brilliant wine, the most northern Rhône-like of the suite, are strong and consistent, denoted by the aura of a great terroir. Sumptuous notes of porcini mushrooms, smoked meats of all types, bouillon, star anise and a verdant kick for lift. Long, plush and forceful. While this is stylized and in synch with the riper expressions of 2021, it boasts an extra dimension and greater detail. Drink or hold.

2021 Onkaparinga Syrah

The fruit for this 2020 Sandown Syrah is from the Sandown vineyard in Blewitt Springs, from 1930 plantings. This is aromatically so different from the 2018. Wow. Savory and dense, this has roasted lamb fat and Sichuan, a touch of hoisin and star anise too. There is also clove bud and licorice root, all of it just on first sniff. After that is mulberry and red licorice, and coming in on the palate is a wave of bright freshness. For all the excitement on the nose, the palate shows a sinuous life and vitality. All the spicy framing just serves to boost the fine fruit. This is kaleidoscopic and morphing, ever moving, almost dappled. Substantial.

2020 Sandown Syrah

One of McLaren Vale’s most astonishing Syrahs is Clarendon Hills’ amazing 2004 Syrah Hickinbotham. Its inky/blue/purple hue is accompanied by aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, smoked meats, melted licorice, coffee beans, graphite, and bacon fat. Extremely full-bodied, powerful, and rich, with moderately high tannin, huge structure as well as massive concentration and intensity, but a sense of elegance, balance, and equilibrium, it should be cellared for 2-3 years, and drunk over the following two decades.

2004 Hickinbotham Syrah

If the Sandown represents this estate’s Mouton and the Brookman their Lafite, the even more backward, tannic, ageworthy, inky/blue/purple-colored 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Hickinbotham is their Latour. Made from 50-year-old vines planted on rocky, shale-based soils, it offers up aromas of creme de cassis, graphite, chocolate, coffee, and tobacco leaves. This powerful, rich, full-bodied effort needs at least 4-5 years of cellaring, and should keep for two decades or more. It is one of the few Clarendon Hills wines to be aged in 100% new French oak. None of these cuvees is fined or filtered.
