The Hickinbotham Syrah blew me away. The 2001 Syrah Hickinbotham boasts glorious amounts of blackberry liqueur intermixed with melted licorice, vanilla, smoke, and earth in a full-bodied, unctuously-textured, viscous style with great purity as well as palate persistence. The finish lasts nearly 60 seconds.

Definitely in the new mode of Clarendon Hills. Deep, dark crimson-purple; an exceptionally complex bouquet with nuances of the roasted meats I normally find so elusive, together with tobacco and blackberry nuances; the impact of 18 months in 70% new French oak is obvious, as it is across all of the Clarendon Syrah and Cabernet range. The long and supple palate has lifted black fruit flavours supported by fine, ripe tannins. All in all, a lovely wine; 595 dozen made from 90-year-old vines. Everything in its place.
