Romas Grenache 2015
Colour: Purpled crimson with ruby glimmer
Nose: A sublime stream of floral rose petal, crushed raspberry and fresh strawberry elegantly permeate from what is still a recessed fruit core. An omnipresent and me;culously laced, minerality nuances a wet slate and flinty backbone. Easily the tightest and the finest aperture of intensity seen in the line-up so far, its ability to offer a limitless stream of truly evolving, pure berry fruit whose illuminating mineral traces is remarkable and a strong promise of substantial future extension.
Palate: A meticulously intricate and finely chalky structure seamlessly carries liquid crushed rock and rose petal infused raspberry whose brightness is amplified by the complex, all natural acidity. Confectionary musk without the sweetness, ladies cosmetic and Glacié cherry ripple throughout the wave like moments of concentration and orchestral resonance in the long finish. Amazingly light and svelte yet still offering an abundance of juicy, ultra fine tannin whose polish is beyond the extraordinary.
REGION: Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale: 10 kms N/E into the hilltops surrounding the township of of McLaren Vale, South Australia. Sitting at 290 metres higher above sea level – slightly cooler micro climates offer longer, milder, very consistent ripening conditions.
CONDITIONS: Winter delivered an unusual array of conditions that can only be described as dry. A perfect Spring season ensued with abundant rain, wind and sunshine. The vines’ bud burst revealed a low quantity of flowers across the districts and extremely even and what can only be described as precocious ripening became a vintage defining element. A typical warm summer was freshened by unusual rains in January and February. By Mid February the early harvest was underway. The entire harvest took place in under 3 weeks across perfect mid to high 20 ̊C max temps and 16-‐‑19 ̊ C min conditions. From tasting the remarkably sweet and perfect, physiologically ripe fruit on the vine and throughout the making process – each vineyard revealed outstandingly spectacular performance. The low crops and perfect conditions constituted a rare alchemy of perhaps once in a lifetime proportions.
WINEMAKING: Low yielding, dry grown vines planted in 1920 are hand picked thereby culturing whole berry, wild yeast fermentation. This increases the retention of the grape’s varietal essence and minimises tannin extract. All pressings are returned to the barrel and bottled on site without fining or filtration.
MATURATION: Finally, barrels are hand selected by the winemaking team. 18 months, within a hierarchy of 1-5 year old tightly grained French Oak.
