Hickinbotham Grenache 2013
Colour: Crimson with a ruby hue
Nose: The Hickinbotham Grenache vineyard, is just 10 metres from the Clarendon Grenache site, however sits on the Northern, sunnier side of the hill; and offers a stark contrast to the pure, organic expression seen just metres away. The aray of floral violet and rose petal notes intertwine with black raspberry, dark cherry, boysenberry and cassis. Perfectly composed without any element of over-ripeness, superfluous alcohol or extroversion, with time in the glass interesting hints of pistacchio, a whiff of clove and an interesting Sarsparilla and graphite-like element nuance with the fruit and take this to the next level.
Palate: Almost limitless fruit richness is perfectly off set with natural acidity that renders an almost glycerin like mouth feel. While voluptuous it is completely svelte-like in the mouth and fine speckles of spice dance within the chalky traces. Despite its majesty and seamlessness; evident finesse and elegance also coexist. Great now and for another decade +.
REGION: Clarendon, McLaren Vale: 10 kms N/E of McLaren Vale and 250 metres higher above sea level. We pick 2-3 weeks later than McLaren Vale and enjoy longer, milder, more consistent ripening conditions.
CONDITIONS: The 2011 winter delivered an unusual array of conditions that can only be described as dry. A perfect Spring season ensued with abundant rain, wind and sunshine. The vines’ bud burst revealed a low quantity of flowers across the districts and extremely even and what can only be described as precocious ripening became a vintage defining element. A typical warm summer was freshened by unusual rains in January and February. By Mid February the early harvest was underway. The entire harvest took place in under 3 weeks across perfect mid to high 20 ̊C max temps and 16-‐‑19 ̊ C min conditions. From tasting the remarkably sweet and perfect, physiologically ripe fruit on the vine and throughout the making process – each vineyard revealed outstandingly spectacular performance. The low crops and perfect conditions constituted a rare alchemy of perhaps once in a lifetime proportions.
WINEMAKING: Low yielding, dry grown 89 y/o vines are hand picked thereby culturing whole berry, wild yeast fermentation. This increases the retention of the grape’s varietal essence and minimises bitter tannin extract. All pressings are returned to the barrel and bottled onsite without fining or filtration.
MATURATION: 18 months, within a hierarchy of 1-5 year old tightly grained French Oak. Barrels are finally hand selected by winemaking team.
