Clarendon Hills Brookman Merlot 2017
Clarendon Hills Brookman Merlot has been made since 1990. A low lying Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale location ensures there is adequate clay component in the soil to ensure the Merlot vine roots do not dry out over the intense Australian summer. This in turn paves the way for an extremely juicy cassis/blackcurrant component in the Merlot every year. Pure berry character, leather, baking spice and creamy milk chocolate are consistent characters in our Merlot every year.
“Black fruit, chocolate, oyster shell, liquorice and pencils, chamomile and mint. Medium to full-bodied, packed with firm graphite tannin, very deep and rolling, pipe tobacco and earth, balanced acidity, superb length with it. It has the ferrous feel of Blewitt, and tastes like proper Merlot should. Unapologetically tannic. Love this.”
“I should add, touch and go for 96 points, and best Australian Merlot I’ve tasted along with Blue Poles Reserve and Hillcrest Reserve (vale) and ’92 Mount Mary.”
95+ points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, November 2021
